Session 4 · Assignment

Summarise a long report

Use your AI assistant on a real piece of your own work: a one-page summary and the three points that matter.

Session 4 · Portfolio piece

Summarise a long report

Priya Shah · Meridian Care · version 1 · 30 January

The report: the sector’s annual workforce report on adult social care, 160 pages.

In one page: vacancies are falling, but turnover in the first year is still the biggest cost for homes our size. Agency use is down where homes run a proper induction.

The three points that matter for Meridian:

1. Most leavers go in their first year, so our induction matters more than a pay rise.

2. Homes that buddy new starters for four weeks keep more of them.

3. Night shifts lose people fastest: that is where to start.

Reflection
The first summary was accurate but generic. I asked it what each finding meant for a 60-bed home like ours, then checked the three figures I quote against the report itself. One came from last year’s edition, so I fixed it.

The brief
What you’ll submit
A one-page summary and the three points that matter, a short reflection and the declaration.
How it’s assessed
Johnnie reviews your work and gives feedback. Resubmit as often as you need.
Hours
Three guided learner hours, counted when you handed it in on 30 January.

Output

A one-page summary and the three points that matter, built from your own work rather than a made-up example.

Why it helps. This is work you do anyway. Doing it once with the assistant, and checking what it gives you, shows you where it saves time and where you still need to look closely.

Steps

  1. Start a new chat and paste your working-context note from session 1.
  2. Click Copy prompt, paste it in, and add the material the assistant needs.Only paste information you are allowed to use at work.
  3. Work through the assistant’s questions, one at a time.
  4. Check what comes back: two facts or figures by hand, and the tone read aloud. If it can’t say where something came from, treat it as unchecked.
  5. Ask it to fix what’s wrong, then copy the final version into a document.
  6. Paste it into the box below.

Prompt

I'm working on this: a one-page summary and the three points that matter. Use my working-context note for background. Before you start, ask me any questions you need to understand what I'm trying to do. Ask them one at a time. When you've finished, list anything you assumed or guessed so I can check it.

What accepted looks like

  • It’s real work from your own job, with anything private taken out
  • It does the job: a one-page summary and the three points that matter
  • You checked it, and say what the assistant got wrong and what you changed
  • A colleague could pick it up tomorrow and use it

  2. AI coach · first read, not the mark · Saturday 30 January, 10:07am

You did this on real work from your own job: a one-page summary and the three points that matter. That is the part that matters most, and it reads clearly.

One thing to tighten: say where the assistant got something wrong and what you changed. A sentence or two at the end of your reflection would cover it.

A question to think about: if you had five minutes to check one figure in it, which one, and why that one?

Good work. The reflection is the best part; keep doing that.
