Ten ways to de-clutter Coursework

Gary, 11 Oct: “that’s good but because all the colours are the same and there are lots of things, it now looks a bit cluttered.” Two sand filter rows, the pills, the cards and the tiles all share one cream-and-white look at one weight, so nothing leads. Each option below keeps the chosen structure (session cards on top, Any time with its own filter below) and fixes that one way.

Every mock is the page as Priya opens it today (Open): sessions 1 and 2 finished, one loose end in each of sessions 3 and 4, and 10 open any-time assignments.

  1. 1One control row

The status segments become plain text tabs with an underline; the Any-time role filter becomes one quiet dropdown beside its heading. One set of tabs on the page, not two.

On screen: 1 row of tabs · 1 dropdown · pictures as today

  2. 2Colour only where it means something

Only work that needs you carries colour (an amber edge on changes needed and overdue). Accepted goes small and grey, pictures go grey, and sand appears once: the hours bar.

On screen: colour on 2 rows · sand once · controls outline-only

  3. 3A “Needs you” band

A deep-green band at the top holds just the two things to act on. Everything under it is quiet and neutral: this week’s card, then Any time.

On screen: 1 dark band · 1 quiet tab row · 1 dropdown

  4. 4Fold what’s finished

Finished sessions become one line, and the loose ends from sessions 3 and 4 share one card, so there is one card before Any time instead of two cards and two pills.

On screen: 1 line · 1 card · tiles as today

  5. 5Any time behind “Show”

Any time is closed by default: one row saying how many and how many hours. Open it for a compact list with the role dropdown inside. Try it.

On screen: 1 control row · 1 closed section · no tiles until asked

  6. 6Two columns

Sessions are the main column; Any time becomes a narrow right-hand rail with small role chips and a compact list. Stacks into one column on a phone.

On screen: 1 control row in the main column · small chips in the rail

  7. 7Strong cards, light tiles

Session cards take a tint of their week’s colour and lead; any-time tiles go plain white and smaller with no picture; both filters go outline-only.

On screen: colour on the session cards only · tiles plain

  8. 8Room to breathe, one sticky bar

Two labelled sections with generous space between, and one sticky bar (“Sessions · Any time” and Filter) instead of two filter rows. Scroll the mock.

On screen: 1 sticky bar · 0 filter rows in the page

  9. 9One filter for the whole page

Role and type move into the one Filter menu at the top. Any time shows only Priya’s own track and Everyone, with a link to the rest.

    On screen: 1 control row · 2 fixed chips · 6 tiles not 10

  10. 10Pictures in one place

Session cards lose their covers for a small numbered disc; the finished pills lose theirs too. Pictures appear only on the any-time tiles.

On screen: pictures in 1 place · numbered discs for sessions
